Books, Readers and Beyond: #53 Finding Books Online

Exercise One
The first exercise asks for three booksellers that are close to my facility, which in this case is the administration building.

1. Half Price Records & Magazines‎
2. Inner Harmony Books‎
3. Barnes & Noble Booksellers Vanderbilt Sq‎

Out of these three places, only Barnes & Nobles has a website. Because this is a store that belongs to a big name franchise, the website offers information about this particular location and their weekly events. It also shows a portrait of what the store looks like as well as the option to get directions to that location. It doesn't have much as far as glamor is concerned, but it is very functional.

Exercise Two
Using the website Barnes & Nobles I did a search for the book titled Leviathan by James Byron Huggins. The book is available starting at $5.83 (used). Using our famous Harris County Public Library website I searched for an electronic copy of this book, and unfortunately we don't have it. I then used the Houston Public Library system, and they also don't have a copy of this book online. I then a quick search for free downloadable books through google, and I came across audible.com, which also didn't have it.

Exercise Three
I have also downloaded eBooks before, and have tried reading them using my computer at home. It is not something that I favor as opposed to feeling the book in my hands and turning the pages manually. I then also downloaded an eBook on my phone and tried to read it that way, which also didn't appeal to me as much as having the book on hand. I do find it more convenient to carry electronic copies of books on my phone because that way not only do I not misplace the book (unless I lose the phone) but also it is carried with me everywhere I go and can be accessed at a moment's notice. The only problem I have with this method is that depending on battery life of your electronic device, reading a book may not be the best thing to do, specially if you are reading a long story that will take several hours to complete. Also, if it is a book downloaded from the library's website, you must be cautious about the expiration date or else you won't be able to read that book anymore. But on the plus side, you don't have to worry about late fees.
